Every year I share our home all decorated for Christmas. We have been living in our home for six years now and this is the first year that I think I got it to where I wanted it to be. As you know, our home design was inspired by the movie “Something’s gotta give” which was set in the Hamptons. A big shingle home, with steep pitched roof lines, lots of windows and set on an ocean front property. If you want to read more about our home design, just click here. Why I feel I finally got it right this year, is that I now have a Christmas tree that fits the two story living room and all the ornaments came together in an elegant, refined way. I believe that at last I captured Hamptons style holiday decor!

Characteristics of Hamptons Style Holiday Decor
Before we take the tour let me explain what Hamptons style holiday decor is all about and how to achieve it.
First, take away all of the clutter and extra decor. Start with a clean slate. Hamptons style always starts with airy, refined spaces.
Next, when figuring out what to decorate with, stick to classic and timeless pieces. We do not want to look back in pictures, analyze the decor and then say “oh that had to be in 2020” because we spot some trendy piece that was in style for a year or two.
Heirloom pieces are perfect such as an old sleigh you may have inherited from your grandparents or found at an estate sale, the china your mother passed on to you, silver or gold photo frames, or even an old oil painting of a wintery scene.
It is also the time to bring out your very best pieces like the crystal glasses or fine cutlery everyone got you for your wedding. Pair those with vintage linen napkins, a beautiful wood table, silver candlesticks, etc. and you are well on your way to capturing a classic Hamptons Christmas.
Hamptons Style Color Palette
Neutrals such as whites, creams, silver and gold are the best choices. You can then add in subtle touches of icy blues or deep greens. Both will look stunning with the neutral palette. I purchased this ornament years ago at a store that has now gone out of business. But I found one similar but it does not have all the crystals at the top. Just click this link for more information.
Make sure to get your wrapping paper, ribbon and bows to match your color palette early in the season so that you get the best selection. Stunning wrapping paper and luxurious velvet ribbons on the gifts will complete this look perfectly!
Ok, so let’s move on to the tour.
Welcome to our home
First up is our formal front door entrance. The two lit birch trees are always in this location because they are large and quite bright. No other lighting is required when they are on.
The warm oversized beige rug grounds and defines the space. This is an indoor rug, but because this area is all under cover it will be fine.
A few simple lanterns spaced around the trees add a little more sparkle and warmth.
On the door and above the transom is a faux wreath and garland. Yes, you heard that right, they are not real, but they are created with such high quality realistic materials that they look real. They are from Balsam Hill and are part of the Mountain Meadow collection.
To take the entrance to the next level and bring a bit of Gatzy style glitz to the area, I draped gold glass bead garlands and a few gold ornaments.
Just the right amount of glamourous and natural textures are perfect for achieving an elegant Hampton style home.
Living room
Our two story living room has 20 foot ceilings, a floor to ceiling stone fireplace flanked by open shelving and cabinetry. It is open concept to the kitchen and dining room.
Truly the one piece that has brought my Christmas decorating to the next level is a 15 Foot narrow Balsam Fir Christmas tree. Every other year, our trees felt short and the space seemed empty or lacking. Here is a link to a similar tree.
This year, I feel like I am walking onto the set of a Hallmark movie.
I wanted an elegant atmosphere with an “old money” feel to enhance my Hamptons style theme. The ornaments that I chose for the tree are all from Balsam Hill:
- Roaring Twenties glass ornament sets (2)
- Burnished Metallics ornament sets
- Gold Antiqued Snowflake Ornament set
- Crystal and Gold tree garland
- Silver and Gold glass bead tree garland
- Natural double-sided Starburst tree topper
- Ivory Lodge faux fur tree skirt
These exquisite ornaments are breathtaking. Everyone who sees them are astonished as they are so high quality.
Carrying on to the shelves, I searched our home for just the right pieces to display with my gold, cream, deep green and black color scheme.
A hand-painted reindeer painting by yours truly, a vintage sleigh with greenery, old skates and gold bells, faux trees in gold pots, gold framed mirror, large pinecones and old books adorn one side of the shelves.
On the other, I have trio of faux trees wrapped in fairy lights with a wooden PEACE sign, an old rustic ceiling medallion that I painted cream, an old-fashioned Christmas village print in a beautiful old gold frame, along with my gingerbread houses, a few antiqued gold stars and various gold ornaments and candles fill out the other side of shelving.
Over the fireplace, I gave the new “swoop” garland style a try and I think it looks interesting and unique.
On our ottoman, I used an old mirror that I painted up Art Deco style as a tray and placed a candle, gold metal tree and a vintage bell garland.
On the side table behind our sofa, I experimented with something a little different. I brought two urns in from outside that we had used for Jenna’s wedding and I placed two lit flocked trees in them. They are flanking an old ornate mirror with a green velvet braided wreath I made and a crystal and gold garland wrapped through in place of a ribbon. Click here for details on how to make it. In front is another vintage bell garland with a small wood dough bowl filled with bleached pinecones and greenery.
My oversized mirror with an ornate white frame also got an upgrade this year. A twinkly crystal garland swoops across the top and falls down one side. Hanging from the top are 3 of the most spectacular pieces from the Roaring Twenties Glass Ornament set from Balsam Hill. The reflection that they capture allow you to see their beauty all the way around.
The Heart of the Home: The Kitchen
I did break with Hamptons style tradition here by incorporating red but there is a very good reason for that.
I have heard that the color red makes food taste better and I need all the help I can get! In fact, they say that the color red evokes the tastebuds and stimulates the appetite. So in the kitchen and dining room the color scheme is red and white.
I love these plaid red and white pillow covers that I use a chair cushions at Christmas.
Starting with a 9 foot flocked tree decked out in lots of red ornaments – most of which I found at the dollar store and Hobby Lobby. The plaid ornaments are one of my favorite finds from the dollar store along with the large red bell garlands and even large single red jingle bell ornaments from Hobby Lobby.
Red and white Christmas theme bowl and platter, red star, white reindeer and a few other decorative objects fill the counters and shelves.
Simple wreaths with a red velvet ribbon and red checked seat cushions tie the theme through to the seating.
The Dining Room
On the china cabinet is my favorite wood sign providing the focal point for the display which consists of more flocked trees, candles, white pottery bells, snowball garland and my crystal sleigh with silver reindeer napkin holders.
On the dining table are red placemats, simple white china, gold cutlery, crystal glassware, a simple runner with beaded “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” with a vintage sleigh holding candles and really holly branches. For the place settings, I chose a white charger, layered with red and white dishes and a simple sprig of holly. Simplicity at it’s best evokes the feel of a table that has been set down through the generations with the same china being handed from one family to another.
Don’t forget the chandelier! Looping a faux evergreen garland, a red berry garland and sparkly red ornaments hand from ribbons above.
Games & Movie Room
Downstairs I have definitely embraced the Hamptons style holiday decor with hints of blue and silver.
Our traditional white mantel and fireplace is decked out in a pinecone garland, stocks and stocking holders and downswept trees from Balsam Hill. The Merry Christmas sign is from Hobby Lobby but here is a link to one from Amazon.
The shelving units on either side are filled with white pottery and lanterns, a white and black Christmas village, an older silver clock on one side.
On the other side black Christmas homes with white and silver bottle brushes, white pottery bells, a silver martini set, a cloche with crystalized pinecones, birch candleholders and a white basket with evergreens in it.
The tree in this area is a frosted Yukon Spruce (9 ft) from Balsam Hill and I have decorated it with all my heirloom crystal ornaments. The shape of this tree is so realistic and it is a joy to decorate!
I also decorated the mini kitchen/bar area with sparkling bar ware, a “most wonderful time of the year” sign.
On the counters you will see a glass cloche with vintage china birds on a branch from my mother-in-law that fits perfectly with the blue color scheme along with a feather wreath and a reindeer vintage sign. Using heirlooms like vintage china figurines fits perfectly with the old Hampton style decor theme.
I also incorporated the gray-blue into the back of chair Christmas wreaths. It’s these little touches that tie the whole theme together.
In the movie room, I kept it simple, a silver sparkle tree and and red Christmas pillows and a red snowflake throw.
Outside: The Greenhouse
At Sweet Valley Acres, Christmas is not complete without our cherished greenhouse named Annie being decorated. Every year, I choose a different theme. This year, I was inspired by nature and the scene from “Frosty the Snowman” where the woodland creatures decorated their area of the forest.
I am a nature lover and make sure all my birdfeeders are filled this time of year because we get a fair bit of snow and it is hard for the birds to find food.
On this beautiful Frosted Alpine Balsam Fir tree, I handpainted a variety of birdhouses and placed faux snow on their roofs. I imagined what the birds might decorate with from our yard and used lavender and dried alliums that I frosted with epsom salts. A glitzy ribbon strung through the branches and along with wooden snowflakes.
On the top of the tree, I completed the look with a larger birdhouse painted to match the green and white theme. For all the instructions on how to achieve this look, just click here.
My greenhouse is a very small space, so all I had room for was two vintage wicker chairs, beautiful throws and pillows and a pretty two tier table decorated with evergreen branches and concrete statue of two love birds to create a cohesive look.
