“Some Christmas tree ornaments do more than glitter and glow, they represent a gift of love given a long time ago.”
Todd Baker

Why would we do a Christmas in July blog hop? Well for all of us in this hop and many of those who read our blogs, we create most of our own decorations for the holidays. In order to get them done, we start working now.
As well, we start placing orders for new decor and materials now so that we don’t miss out on our favorite pieces.
I hope this blog will give you some ideas that you would want to incorporate into your own decor next Christmas! Keep in mind, with time passing so quickly these days, it won’t be long before the first snowflake falls!
Before I get into all of the decor ideas, I would love to pop back in time and share a special story with you.
It was a beautiful day. My husband, children and I were visiting my mom and she asked me to look for something she had lost. I looked everywhere and then I came upon a box under the bed in the guest room. There was a yellow stickie with the words “SPECIAL SPECIAL SPECIAL – for Crystal”. It was a mandarin orange box and I ran out to my mom and said I had found this box.
Her face immediately dropped and she said “you weren’t supposed to find that until after I had passed.” She then explained that she had left me her most prized Christmas ornaments because she knew I was the one who would treasure them.
You see, my mom and I loved Christmas. I mean we really loved Christmas. We decorated and decorated. We baked and baked. She read me Christmas stories and we had Christmas music on for the whole month of December. I never saw any of the rest of my family or any of my friends or their families get into Christmas like mom and I did. It truly was our thing@
The magic of Christmas has filled my life ever since and I have shared that love with my husband and children. Needless to say when it comes to Christmas, we go all out. So for this Christmas in July post, let me take you back and share some of my favorite decorations.
Entrance Decorations
Now that I am older, I have extended Christmas decorating under the guise of “Winter Decorating”. In Kelowna, we start to see snow in November so I start decorating right after Remembrance day. The wreath below is a wreath I created by spraying the wreath and clear plastic balls with mirror glass paint. I popped in a few ostrich feathers and what a winter wonderland wreath it is! The way the wind ruffles the feathers is so delicate. If you would like to learn how to make this wreath just click on this link.
To complete the picture, I draped real evergreen boughs and twinkle lights above the door. I then flanked the door with these gorgeous lit birch trees. Some faux snow and a lot of candles and voila “Welcome to Winter Wonderland!”
As we drew closer to Christmas, I created a wreath alternative by sewing an old time traditional Santa hat with faux fur and aged bronzed bells and then stuffed it with evergreen boughs. This project was so popular – I have had 67,000 views of it!!! Here is link of how to make this wreath alternative.
Now for our back door which is pictured below. I went for a very traditional red and green color scheme as I wanted something bold and cheerful. My favorite feature is the mailbox stuffed with presents. Who wouldn’t want to come home to that?
Outdoor Decorations
Now if you have known me long, you know that I decorate my garden and greenhouse for every occasion and even snow and cold won’t stop me. A full evergreen wreath on the gate, lights on the arbour and red ornaments in the tree make it so festive and pretty.
This past year, the theme in my garden was Santa. First a cute sign on our mechanical shed.
Then a full out Santa’s lounge in the greenhouse. This was so much fun to decorate. If you want to see more fully what I did, just click on this link.
The year prior, the greenhouse was set up more like a Christmas tree lot. It was so warm and inviting.
What Christmas tree lot wouldn’t be complete without homemade sugar cookies and hot chocolate?
Interior Decor
Foyer
Last year our foyer had a silver and black theme with a few touches of blue. One of my favorite pieces are my mercury glass candlesticks. They are so elegant.
Here is a view from above our living room showing the Christmas prior where my theme had more black decor with pops of silver, white and blue. It is a striking combination.
The most fun project, I did last year was coming up with a variety of ways to decorate a dough bowl for Christmas. Here is the cute little snowman setting I created. There was also a table centerpiece one, one filled with moss, trees and reindeer, one for the guest room and one for the front entrance. Click here for a link to all the other options. I think you will really enjoy them!
Kitchen
Throughout the months of November and December, I change the decor a few times as you will see in the photos below.
First a bright and airy Christmas kitchen.
Next a little more woodsy with faux trees and pinecones.
Next, a corner that will please everyone with a sweet tooth. I love having a hot cocoa bar set up on a tiered tray so that there is lots of room for all the goodies like marshmallows, chocolate chips, candy canes, etc.
While some areas are quite done up with quite a bit of decor, other areas are simple with an evergreen bough and candles on a cutting board.
Dining Room
Take a look at how my style has changed from one year to another. Below our dining room was decked out with vintage red and white decor.
The year prior, the theme was the night before Christmas where I placed black and white Christmas houses and a silhouette of reindeer taking off. Silver bottle brush trees added to the dreaminess of the scene.
Something I would suggest if you have any small Christmas houses – place them in a fancy dessert cloche, sprinkle snow inside and let it take center stage on your table.
Thank you!
I hope this walk down memory lane has inspired you to start planning for your own Christmas decor.
Next up on the hop is Kristy who is sharing her Christmas decorating ideas and inspiration throughout the house. Kristy is a real interior designer and always has so much great advice. You are going to love her blog!

July 16, 2022Crystal, first of all, beautiful home and Christmas decor! But I knew I recogonized that lake view! I grew up on Lakeshore Drive in Kelowna!! Took swim lessons in the lake, picked apples, peaches and cherries in the orchards, waterskiied behind our boat, got married overlooking the lake 30 years ago! Sadly my parents have both passed and I don’t have family in the Okanagan anymore. Every summer I miss the Okanagan fruit! So enjoy those tree ripened peaches for me ok! Pinned 😉
