Have you ever experienced love at first sight?  Recently I did and then my whole family fell in love too.  You might be thinking that I am talking about a baby or a new puppy but I am not and you are going to be shocked to hear what it was that we all fell in love with.  It was the most exquisite, dreamy, delicate yet detailed…garden wallpaper I have ever seen!!!

Yes garden wallpaper or you could also call it a garden wall mural!  It has everything I love – the most beautiful shades of blue, allium flowers and gorgeous artwork.

I shared a sneak peak of the powder room makeover and here are some of the responses I received:

“This is the best thing I have ever seen done to a powder room” Trina

“I’m absolutely dying…this is so beautiful. I love this so much! Great job” Rhona

“Oh my goodness!!!!! This mural is a dream!!!” Jenasie

“Wow!! I have never seen anything more gorgeous” Tammy Joyce

Oh dear alliums – how I love you

The second I saw it I knew I had to have it and I knew the perfect spot for it – in our ho hum so boring powder room with an exterior door that led to my garden that was filled with alliums!

Look how boring our bathroom was:

The problem with alliums is that they only bloom in the spring and then they are gone. Sure you can dry their stems and perfectly round orb heads, but nothing compares to their beautiful shades of white, blue or purple, their spikey round heads and the shadows they create as they sway in the wind.

The artwork in this wallpaper is incredibly well done.  It has depth, movement and a touch of fantasy.  You see, the size of the flowers make you feel like a small bug at the base of a garden looking up into the sky filled with flowers.  It is kind of a “Honey I shrunk the kids” moment but so much more beautiful.

A large mural in a small powder room?

I bet you are thinking “don’t you dare put a large scale wallpaper in a small powder room”,  or “it will be too much”, or “people will think you are nuts!”  Well stop right there with those thoughts.  Not only did I get the stamp of approval from my husband and my 27 year old very artistic daughter, I also got the very difficult to obtain approval of my 25 year old son!!! I know, I nearly fell over too when he said he loved it.

Then we had an engagement party and everyone who attended, loved the wallpaper!

What company has created such wonderful wallpaper?  None other than Photowall out of Sweden.  Their wallpaper design is beyond every other wallpaper manufacturer!!! Just click on this link to see all their beautiful wallpaper.

Imagine how thrilled I was when Photowall liked the project I shared with them and they decided to gift me with the wall mural to get it done!

So let’s get down to the nitty gritty about the process.

Step 1 – Drool over all the gorgeous choices on the Photowall website

They have so many different styles such as Plants & Flowers, Forests & Woodlands, Abstract, Natural Phenomenon, Landscapes & Scenics just to name a few.

As I am sure you can guess, I got lost and stayed lost in the Plants & Flowers section.  Some of my favorites are: Fabulous Flowers, A Country Weekend, Moving with the Wind, and of course my all time favorite Blue Wild Meadow.

Here is Blue Wild Meadow – is it not gorgeous? It is made from premium quality material with eco-friendly print technique.

Step 2 – Calculate the dimensions

Photowall has a very handy calculator where all you have to do is enter the height of the wall your are going to wallpaper and then the length.  I wanted mine to wrap around three sides of the bathroom so I measured each wall, added those numbers together and then inserted the final length into Photowall’s calculator.  They advise adding 2.5 to 4 inches extra to allow for error and I am so glad we did.  I allowed 4 inches extra and somehow after going around the room, we were only left with 1.5 inches of extra wallpaper!  I triple measured the room and yet so little was left over.  Imagine how disappointed I would have been if I had only ordered the correct amount according to MY MEASUREMENTS 🙁

I also went the further step and ordered the premium quality with an extra matte finish and I was so glad I did.  The thickness and high quality of the paper was outstanding.  We had a couple of times where the paper got slightly bent and it popped right back to shape with no creases visible.

I also ordered the wallpaper kit for $21 because I definitely needed new tools.

Place your order and then try to be patient and wait.  It actually arrived very quickly so you don’t have to be that patient.

Step 3 – Clean

Before applying the wallpaper, make sure to wash all the walls and trim because you need to adhere the wallpaper to a clean surface.

Step 4 – Mix the wallpaper paste

Photowall sent more than enough wallpaper paste but make sure to read all the instructions.

Fill a clean bucket with 4 litres/1 US gallon of LUKEWARM water and very slowly add the paste powder while stirring briskly.

Leave the paste to stand for 5 minutes and then stir again.  It should be nice and thick and it is ready to go.

Step 5 – Check the wallpaper

The wallpaper rolls are numbered from the first to the last one and are hung from left to right.  Make sure to do a review of the material to ensure that it is in good shape with no defects.  Cut on the dotted line to separate one panel from another.

Step 6 – Check to make sure your starting point is vertically straight with a level

It is imperative to hang the first panel perfectly straight.  Draw vertical marks on the wall 45 cm apart from ceiling to floor very, very lightly in pencil.  This will ensure that your first panel is hung straight.

Step 7 – Apply paste to wall

Use a brush to cut in at the top, sides and bottom.  Then roll the whole area with paste.  Make sure every little area has a good amount of paste on it.  We did it quite heavily and that worked well.  If you miss any spots it will not adhere and a blister will form.

Apply the paste one panel in advance.

Step 8 – Hang the panel

Apply the panel from the top of the wall down to the bottom.  Use your hands or the wallpaper brush, starting in the middle and smoothing out towards the edges to stick wallpaper to the wall.

Hang the next panel edge to edge and do not overlap the panels.  There should be an exact match with the pattern from one panel to the next.  Take care to press the panels together at the seams and use a seam roller for best results.

We found it easy to make slight shifts where necessary to get the pattern to line up.

Remove any excess paste with a damp cloth.

Step 9 – Trim

Trim off any excess paper at the bottom or top.

Step 10 – Let dry

Allow 24 hours for the wallpaper to dry and then enjoy!

Look how gorgeous it is!

As each panel went up, my heart soared.  This wallpaper did not let me down in any way.  When it was complete, it actually exceeded my expectations.

The beautiful detail on each flower is mesmerizing!

One day I was outside and Bentley was painting the exterior trim of the door and he had it open.  It was the first time, I had seen it from the exterior with the sun shining in.  It truly took my breath away.  I am so happy I chose this pattern.

I give this product 5 stars for the easy application, high quality and wallpaper design!

What about the rest of the powder room?

Once the garden wallpaper/wall mural was up, the rest of the bathroom really needed a refresh.

I picked out a new mirror, lights and hardware for the vanity and Bentley installed them. We couldn’t afford to replace the faucet and truly it is only a few years old so it wasn’t necessary. The wallpaper pattern looked beautifully with both the gold and the black, so I opted to only change out the hardware on the vanity. To tie the black faucet and gold mirror/lights together, I chose knobs that were black and gold and not too fussy.

One of the things I love in our refreshed powder room is how the wallpaper gets reflected back in the mirror. Look how it catches different views.

Before and After

What a gorgeous transformation! It is bright and lively without being too much. This powder room really needed this pop of life.

It is not overpowering and proof that a large scale mural is fantastic in a small space – you just have to pick the right one!

Look how wonderful it looks with the door open to my garden.
